Thompson Takes Home The Title

by Eric Duran, Ringside, Photos By Joseph Cordova, Brawlin.net

Jim Smith and Poor Boys Boxing brought us, “Battle Under the Stars”, a night of gloomy clouds and a dirt infield, and some dirt bag fans, who were kept under control, as well.

It was an exciting night of Professional boxing, MMA eliminators, and amateur Muay Thai.  Local fighters from around Colorado put forth exceptional heart and skill, but it was an out-of-towner that stole the show and took home the championship belt.

The card started off with 3 amateur Muay Thai bout featuring 6 of the toughest females I’ve ever seen.  Also, fans were treated to 3 MMA eliminators, one of the bouts producing, maybe, the greatest knockout in recent memory.  And last but not least, the pro’s from the sweet science.

Gallegos Gets Stopped

The Steel Yard in Gary, IN hosted the "Steel Yard Brawl" boxing event, which featured a Gary's own, NABC Lightweight Champion, "Merciless" Mary McGee (15-0-0-1, 9 KOs) in the main event. The vociferous crowd was treated to tremendous fireworks both in and outside the ring, as a terrific fireworks show followed McGee's destruction of Tonya Gallegos (4-9-0, 2 KOs).

Gallegos actually came out swinging with wide power shots and looked to pressure McGee. But McGee patiently absorbed most of the shots with her guard and countered with devastating rights to the head. Midway into the round, a huge punishing counter right dropped Gallegos hard. To her credit, she got up but found herself getting mauled and referee Kurt Spivey mercifully issued a standing 8 count just before the bell sounded. In round two, Gallegos looked to reestablish her aggression, but yet again, she fell victim to a counter-right and a damaging barrage that followed. Once more, the referee reissued a standing eight-count. Moments later, Gallegos tasted the canvas for the last after eating another right to the head. She got up looking very battered and the fight was then wisely stopped. The official time was 1:53 of round two.

Homecoming For Alvarado

Undefeated super lightweight prospect turned contender, Mike Alvarado, 22-0, 15kos, will be fighting the main event on a card to be co-promoted by Top Rank and Delgado Promotions on October 3rd at the National Western Stockshow Complex.

No word on the supporting bouts or Alvarado's opponent, although it is safe to say stablemate Ricky Lopez should see action on this card.

Alvarado is coming off a fourth round destruction of the usually durable Cesar Bazan and is looking for a top ten type opponent to begin the move toward a world title shot.

We will keep you updated as the card develops.

Deandre Latimore Gunning For a Verno Phillips Shot
Double B. Publicity

LAS VEGAS, NV - Deandre "THE BULL" Latimore, fresh off his ESPN2 televised devastating knockout of Sechew Powell on June 11th, has moved to #6 in the IBF junior middleweight rankings.

“It’s a nice start” said manager Jerry Giuliano. “Numbers 1 and 2 they kept vacant so we’d be willing to fight anyone above for the mandatory to the champion Verno Phillips.”

Listed ahead of Latimore, ranked 3 through 5, are former world champion Cory Spinks, former ESPN Prospect of the Year, Joel Julio and undefeated prospect James Kirkland.

While pleased to hear about his placement in the rankings, Latimore was very quick to point out that he was ready to fight Verno Phillips immediately. ‘They can make that fight today and I’m ready. I’ve been training every day at Striking Unlimited here in Las Vegas, getting up at 5:30am to do my running. I’m ready to go,” said the 22 year old St. Louis native.

Deandre Latimore, 19-1 (16KO’s) is managed by Jerry Giuliano of Knockout Management and promoted by Steve Smith of Rumble Time Promotions in St. Louis.

Quick Q&A With Villareal And Utajara

by Marvin Barela

1) How are you and your camp going?

Victor: Things are going very well.

Ro: Camp went great.. Victor was the premier sparring partner for Mike Alvarado's upcoming fight on the under card of Cotto vs Marinigato . We learned a lot and are humble enough to admit that.

2) How do you answer the question that is floating around the Fight Fans Forum, that you are not going to make it to the later rounds because you'll fade after 3?

V: We did a lot of running and a shit load of sparring

R: We had Victor spar Mike for a ten round fight all through camp, As you know Mike is always there ready to put the hurtin' on you always pressing the fight. It wasn't easy but we definitely learned from this camp.

3) Pat Thompson has more experience in several 8round and a couple 10 round fights. How are you preparing for that?

V: As I've said before, we are not taking anything for granted, Pat brings a lot to the table. But sparring with Mike ain't no joke

R:That is what we respect the most about Pat... But I've faced him twice while working in the opposite corner. So I'm very familiar with his style which he doesn't change.

4) Do you believe you have the power to stop Thompson?

V: I believe I can when he comes forward

R: When Vic sits in the pocket, he'll catch Pat with a right we'll see how Pat responds

5)Did you see the Sanchez/ Thompson fight?

V: To be honest I was else where

R: I watched it and saw the same style, I have a lot of respect for Pat but I see no real problem for Vic

6)Do you think that after you win the Colorado/ Nebraska Title people will start to give you that respect?

V:I really don't care if they respect me or not. The only respect I care about are the ones who have been there since the beginning. As long as I'm winning and leaving it all in the ring. People will, I hope, start to support me

R: Probably not it is hard to please everyone. We are a tight knit family up here so as long as we have that back up , we'll be alright

7)Do you think there might be a possibly rematch with Mauriuce?

V: Hell yea I'm down for a rematch

R: There is a possibility but we won't pressing the issue. There is some politics

8)I know you are not over looking Thompson. But what is down the road for Victor?

V: When I beat Pat, there will some doors opening up

R: Let's just focus on the task at hand

Verno Phillips-Ronald Hearns in The Works For The Fall
By Rick Reeno

Sources close to the situation have informed BoxingScene.com that talks are ongoing to match IBF junior middleweight champion Verno Phillips (42-10, 21KOs) against undefeated prospect Ronald Hearns (19-0, 15KOs), son of legendary former champion Thomas Hearns. The fight would take place in the fall.

Talks were previously held for Phillips to defend against John Duddy, who planned to move down in weight for the fight. The word I hear is that Duddy's camp was not willing to agree to future options if their fighter won.

A possible co-feature being discussed would match Glen Johnson against Shaun George. George is coming off his crushing knockout of former heavyweight champion Chris Byrd.

Villareal Takes On Thompson In Title Tilt

Local hopeful Victor Villareal, 6-1-1, 3kos, will face his toughest test to date in Nebraska's Patrick 'Head Hunter' Thompson who has nearly 30 fights to his credit against the upper echelon of the 47 and 54 pound divisions, coming up short against prospects.  This bout will be for the Colo/Nebraska state title at super middleweight although they will fight at a catch weight of 164.  The title will be recognized by both the Colorado and Nebraska commissions.

Undercard action will see a rematch between Brad Jackson, 5-0-1, 4kos and Julio Lanzas, 5-14-6, 1ko, who fought to a draw in March.

Jario Delgado, 2-0, 2kos, will take on tough trial horse Javier Segura, 4-14, 4kos, of Nebraska.  Delgado will have the skills with Segura holding an edge in experience.

John Kiser will take on Jose Beltran in heavyweight action.  Tommy Atencio was to make his debut on this card but his opponent pulled the plug on Monday.  The search is on for a quick replacement.

Sven Bean will feature MMA bouts from his Battlequest series.

MMA FEATURE BOUTS:

There will be three solid MMA matches at the event featuring fighters from Colorado, Arizona, and South Dakota.

In a light heavyweight bout New York transplant Ken Kreuscher takes on Battlequest veteran Coy Sasse. Kreuscher is 1-1 in MMA and 1-0 in Muay Thai. All wins have come by way of knockout. He has trained with the likes of Renzo Gracie, Nate Marquardt and Kru Phil Nurse. Coy Sasse hails from Rapid City, South Dakota and is a well rounded fighter out of Dynamic Martial Arts and is trained by veteran fighter/coach Josh Usera. Sasse made his debut at the Battlequest 8 event where he dispatched Rory O'Farrel in the first round. Sasse also has a 2-0 amateur boxing record.

In a battle of welterweights Ralston Baker clashes with Justin Gaethje. Baker is a very skilled MMA fighter, with a solid amateur boxing background. He is trained by Adam Martinez of Infinite Martial Arts, a Royce Gracie affiliate academy. Baker is one of the top ranked up and coming welterweights on the ROF/BQ roster. Baker will be facing an amazing athlete in Justin Gaethje. Gaethje compiled a record of 191-9 wrestling at Stafford High School in Arizona, where he was a four-time regional champion, and twice named team captain. He is a two time Arizona State Champion. Also a standout football player, Gaethje won three varsity letters on the gridiron, and was named 1st Team and 1st State All-Region Defensive Back, as well as making the All-Star Team.

In the first MMA bout of the evening two lightweights will make their debut as submission stylist Justin Griffis locks up with wrestler Rocco Depaolo. Griffis is a Brazilian Jiujitsu blue belt under Mauricio Zingano. Depaolo is a Colorado state runner up and is part of the UNC wrestling squad.

MUAY THAI BOUTS:

The fight card will also feature 3 women's Muay Thai matches.

In the feature bout Lauren Sugihara faces Jessica Hollenback. Sugihara is better known as DJ Ms. Vicious, one of the most sought after DJ's in the industry. She is known for her looks, something that has garnered attention from Playboy, but she can also fight. She is currently 2-0 in Muay Thai and will be looking to enter in to the MMA scene in the future. She is trained by the legend Clarence Thatch of 3-D Martial Arts. Jessica Hollenback is 1-0 and comes out of the Colorado Muay Thai camp. She has the most technically sound Muay Thai coach in the region, Oscar Martinez, in her corner.

La Boxing's Christina Kaneesal (1-1) will face off against Colorado Muay Thai's Rachel Sahlberg (2-0). Both girls are known for their toe-to-toe non stop style and should be a crowd pleaser.

And to kick off the night, Sarah Padilla (0-1) of Denver will face debut fighter Danyella Hogle at 132-137 lbs.

Alvarado 'Buzz-saws' Through Bazan To Remain Unbeaten

by Chris Morris Photo by Chris Cozzone

Undefeated prospect Mike Alvarado continues to pass the tests put in front of him, although Bazan was more like a 'pop quiz'.  Nonetheless Alvarado stopped the usually durable, only been stopped twice in a 60 fight career, Cesar Bazan in impressive fashion Saturday night on the Cotto-Margarito PPV.

Alvarado started slow, as he usually does, feeling out the opponent and getting his timing worked out.  Bazan took the first round which was carried by a head snapping uppercut he landed mid round. Shann Villhauer was honest in the corner telling Alvarado "That's one for him and none for you".

Alvarado picked up the pace and punch output in the second before hurting Bazan in the third.

In the fourth Alvarado began to open up on Bazan, landing heavy and accurate shots that had the veteran reeling.  Alvarado pushes Bazan back to the ropes and lands a left hook followed by a left upper cut and straight right hand all of which hit Bazan sending him down to the canvass in a heap.  It looked like he might be complaining that the right hand landed a thumb in the eye as it was a glancing blow, but the outcome was never in question.  The only question was what round and what punch.

Alvarado looked very sharp offensively and his defense was good too, although a little head movement would go along way for the 140 pound prospect turned contender.

It was truly a thrill for me personally to have seen Alvarado's career blossom going from his debut at the Greystone Castle in Longmont to fighting on pay per view in Las Vegas.  His first interview with Max Kellerman was great.  Most fighters getting that opportunity would call names, not Alvarado, he showed true class.  He gave the veteran, Bazan, respect and went on to say he is very comfortable at 140lbs, he seldom fights at the super lightweight limit, and is now ready to take on the top ten.

Alvarado should be fighting for a world title by the end of 2009.

Alvarado's Test Of Time
It’ll be youth vs. experience Saturday night, when undefeated Mike Alvarado takes on former champ Cesar Bazan
fightnews.com

Story and photos by Chris Cozzone
-
FightWireImages.com

Calling it his “definitely, the biggest fight to this point,” four-year professional Mike Alvarado will be put to the test Saturday night against former lightweight champ, 16-year veteran Cesar Bazan.

“Bazan’s overall experience makes this a very tough fight,” the undefeated Alvarado said today from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where a final press conference was held to highlight the undercard of Saturday night’s Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito showdown.

“He’s been around a while.”

Alvarado is not exaggerating.

While the Denver fighter was chasing girls and wrestling in high school, Bazan was fighting for, winning, then losing, world championships.

The 58-bout, 33-year-old Mexican from Mexico City is seven years removed from his world championship status. Winning the WBC lightweight title in 1998, from Stevie Johnston, Bazan defended his belt once before losing it less than a year later in a rematch to Johnston. After racking up four wins, Bazan got another shot at his old title in 2001, against Jose Luis Castillo, who’d snagged it from Johnston. Bazan was stopped in round six by Castillo.

Since then, Bazan has batted a slightly-better than .500 record through the last seven years, settling into a role of a sort of gatekeeper for fighters on their way into top contention.

“Alvarado is an up-and-coming fighter, but he’s still trying to figure it all out,” Bazan said today. “I know it’s going to be a good fight, but I’m very prepared for him.

“My experience will win this fight.”

Alvarado says he is up to the challenge.

“I’m prepared for Bazan,” he says. “These are the kind of guys I need to fight.”

In his last bout, televised on Telefutura in May, Alvarado scored big with a seventh-round TKO over Michel Rosales. Since then, he says his camp has been taken to a new level.

“Everything is more serious now,” he says. “We’ve taken it to the next level.”

Dispelling rumors that he’s just been released from a stint in a county jail, Alvarado says he’s been in hard training at Delgado’s Gym in Denver for six weeks now.

“There are a lot of haters out there spreading these rumors,” says Alvarado, who is, presently, Denver’s highest prospect.

“We’ve had a great camp and there’s no truth to the rumors.”

After Bazan, the Top Rank-promoted Alvarado says he wants nothing but top ten fighters. Promoter Bob Arum envisions Alvarado fighting for a 140-pound title by the end of 2009—should he get by Bazan, that is.

Frankel Makes Fight Look Like 'Ground Hog Day'

Steve ‘Match Makin’ Mestas really out did himself this show, which was aptly named, Warpath. He put on no less than 6 pro boxing bouts with four being all out wars. There wasn’t an empty seat in the house and the standing room only areas were filled to the rim as well. In the main event ‘Red Hot’ Rob Frankel made his homecoming bout look easy as he is simply a few levels above Daniel Gonzalez. Undercard action was fast and fierce as Brittney Cruz stopped her opponent in the first and Juan Santiago got the KO in the second. Marcos Herrera, Brandon Buchanon and Anthony Wehr all pounded out unanimous decision wins in their respective bouts.

‘Red Hot’ Rob Frankel finally made an appearance in the Mile High City after over a year on the road and he did not disappoint the Palladium fight fans. Both men weighed in at 140 pounds but Frankel definitely looked like the bigger man in the ring and he also had a decent advantage in reach. He could have used these two things to make it an easy night for himself, as he controlled the fight from the outside with his jab and right hand, but he decided to take the hard route and went inside with Gonzalez to bang it out.
